Chromebook Won’t Turn On: 8 Fixes That Actually Work

You hold the power button and nothing happens: no logo, no light, no fan noise. A Chromebook won’t turn on for a short list of reasons, and a dead battery causes most of them, not a broken motherboard.

Work through the fixes below in order. The first few take five minutes and solve the problem more often than you’d expect. The later ones point toward a real hardware repair.

Why won’t my Chromebook turn on?

A handful of causes show up again and again. Work down this list before you assume the worst:

• A battery drained to 0 percent, with not even enough charge to light up the screen
• A charger, cable, or wall outlet that isn’t actually delivering power
• A frozen system state left over from a crash or a forced shutdown
• A loose or damaged USB-C charging port
• A ChromeOS update that didn’t finish installing

Fix 1: Charge it, the top reason a Chromebook won’t turn on

A completely flat battery is the single most common reason a Chromebook stays dark. Plug in the original charger, or a USB-C PD charger of the same wattage, and look for a charging light near the port.

1. Plug in the charger and check for a charging light near the port.
2. If you see one, leave it charging for at least 30 minutes before pressing the power button again.
3. If you don’t see a light at all, skip ahead to Fix 3 and try a different charger and outlet.

Some Chromebooks won’t respond to the power button at all until the battery holds a small amount of charge. That’s normal, not a fault.

Fix 2: Try a hard reset

A hard reset restarts the embedded controller, the small chip that manages power, the keyboard, and the battery. It clears a frozen boot state without touching your files.

1. Press and hold Refresh (the circular arrow key, where F3 sits on a normal keyboard).
2. While holding Refresh, tap Power.
3. Let go of Refresh as soon as the screen reacts, then see if it boots normally.

Fix 3: Swap the charger, cable, and outlet

USB-C chargers and cables fail more often than people expect, and a worn cable can look fine while barely delivering power.

1. Try a different USB-C cable.
2. Try a different charger, 18W or higher, or match the wattage printed on the original.
3. Try a different USB-C port on the Chromebook itself. Some models only charge from one or two of them.
4. Try a different wall outlet, in case the outlet itself is dead.

Fix 4: Look for a charging light

Fix 5: Rule out a dim or dead screen

1. Tap the brightness up key a few times (top row, usually next to the volume keys), in case the screen is simply too dim to see.
2. Shine a flashlight at an angle across the screen. A very faint image means the backlight failed but the panel is still getting a signal.
3. Connect the Chromebook to an external monitor or TV over HDMI or USB-C. If the desktop shows up there, the Chromebook is turning on fine and the problem is the built-in display, not the power system.

Fix 6: Unplug every peripheral

Disconnect everything plugged into USB ports, SD card slots, and headphone jacks. A shorted or faulty peripheral, a dock especially, can occasionally block the boot process entirely.

1. Remove USB drives, SD cards, headphones, and any USB-C hub or dock.
2. Unplug external mice, keyboards, and monitors too.
3. Try the power button again with nothing else attached.

Fix 7: Drain any residual charge, then restart

If the Chromebook is stuck in a bad electrical state rather than a truly dead one, a full discharge sometimes clears it.

1. Unplug the charger completely.
2. Hold Power for 30 seconds to drain any residual charge sitting in the circuitry.
3. Plug the charger back in and try powering on normally.

Fix 8: Inspect the charging port

Bent pins, lint, or debris inside a USB-C port can block the connection even with a good charger and a good cable.

1. Power everything off and unplug the charger first.
2. Look inside the port with a flashlight for bent pins, lint, or debris.
