Screen flickering on a Dell Chromebook can range from a barely-noticeable flash to a constant strobing effect that makes the display unusable. The cause depends on when and how it happens.
Flickering only at certain brightness levels
If flickering appears mainly at low brightness, ChromeOS may be using a display feature called PWM (pulse-width modulation) dimming, which can flicker faster than the eye should notice but sometimes doesn’t on certain panels. Try setting brightness to a mid or high level and see if the flickering stops or lessens — this points to a display characteristic rather than a fault.
Software-related flickering
- Restart the Chromebook. This clears most graphics driver glitches that build up over long sessions.
- Check for a ChromeOS update under Settings > About ChromeOS — display driver bugs are patched fairly regularly.
- Disconnect any external monitor. A flickering external display connected over HDMI or USB-C can sometimes make the internal panel flicker too if ChromeOS is confused about display configuration — disconnect and restart.
Hardware causes
If flickering gets worse when you move the screen, tilt the lid to a specific angle, or press gently near the hinge, that points to a loose or damaged display cable rather than a software issue.
