ASUS Chromebook Flip and Detachable models rely on touch as heavily as the trackpad, so an unresponsive touchscreen is more disruptive than on a clamshell-only device. Here’s how to fix it.
Start with a restart
The touch digitizer is driven by a background service that can stop responding independently of the rest of the system. A full restart resolves this more often than any other single step.
Whole screen unresponsive
- Check Settings > Device > Displays to confirm ChromeOS still lists the touchscreen as connected.
- Fold the screen into tent or tablet mode and back — on ASUS Flip convertibles, the hinge-angle sensor can trigger a re-initialization of the touch driver.
- Run the Diagnostics app if your model includes an input test, to confirm the digitizer is detected at the hardware level.
Partial response or inaccurate touches
Remove any screen protector, which can interfere with edge detection and cause taps near the border to register incorrectly or not at all. If specific areas consistently fail regardless of accessories, that points to physical damage to the digitizer layer, often from pressure (a tight bag, a stack of books on top of the closed laptop).
Rule out a full system freeze
If the trackpad and keyboard are unresponsive at the same time as the touchscreen, the whole system may be frozen rather than the touch input specifically — a hard reset (Refresh + Power) is the right first move in that case.
Check for a ChromeOS update
Touch driver regressions do occasionally ship and get fixed in the next release. Check Settings > About ChromeOS > Check for updates, especially if the problem started right after your last update.
Powerwash as a last software step
If the touchscreen fails the Diagnostics test or remains unresponsive after an update check, a Powerwash resets touch-related drivers and settings to factory defaults. Back up your files first.
When it’s the digitizer itself
A touchscreen that fails hardware diagnostics or shows visible damage under the glass needs a digitizer replacement, which on convertible models means replacing the touch-bonded display assembly rather than a simple panel swap.
