HP Chromebook Microphone Not Working: How to Fix It

If your HP Chromebook’s microphone isn’t working during Google Meet, Zoom, or a voice recording app, walk through these checks in order — the fault is rarely the microphone hardware itself.

1. Check microphone permissions

Go to Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Microphone and make sure the app or site you’re using has access. ChromeOS treats browser tabs, PWAs, and Android apps as separate permission contexts, so a call app that worked last week can lose access silently after a Chrome or Android update.

2. Confirm the correct input is selected

Many HP Chromebooks have a combo headphone/microphone jack. If a headset was plugged in previously, ChromeOS may still be routing input to it even after it’s unplugged. Check the audio input dropdown in your call app, or unplug and replug the jack to force ChromeOS to re-detect the built-in mic.

3. Test with the Diagnostics app

Open the Diagnostics app to check whether the microphone is being detected at all, independent of any one call app’s settings.

4. Restart, then check for updates

A simple restart resolves most audio driver hiccups. If it persists, check Settings > About ChromeOS for a pending update.

5. Check for a physical mute switch or key

Some HP models have a function-row microphone mute key. Look for a small crossed-out mic icon in the status area, which indicates the system-level mute is active.

If you’re also seeing no sound from the speakers, check whether a single app or a recent update is the common cause before assuming two separate hardware faults. The Lenovo microphone guide and general Chromebook microphone guide cover the same steps if you’re troubleshooting more than one machine.

If nothing restores audio input

A microphone that fails the Diagnostics test and remains silent after a Powerwash points to a hardware fault, most likely a disconnected internal microphone cable or a failed component on the motherboard. This isn’t user-serviceable on most HP Chromebooks, so check your warranty status before pursuing further repair.
