How to Change the Wallpaper and Theme on a Chromebook

Quick Answer

Right-click anywhere on the desktop and select Set wallpaper & style to change the background, accent color, and light/dark mode. For a Chrome browser theme instead, go to the Chrome Web Store’s Themes section.

Changing the Wallpaper

Step 1: Open wallpaper settings

Right-click any empty area of the desktop and choose Set wallpaper & style, or go to Settings > Personalization > Wallpaper.

Step 2: Pick a category or upload your own

Browse built-in categories like Nature, Art, or Solid colors, or click My Images to upload a personal photo from your Files app or Google Photos.

Step 3: Switch between light and dark mode

In the same Personalization panel, toggle Dark theme to switch the system-wide color scheme, including menus, the launcher, and supported apps.

Step 4: Set a dynamic color accent

Newer ChromeOS versions can automatically pick an accent color that matches your wallpaper, applied to buttons, toggles, and highlights throughout the system.

Changing the Chrome Browser Theme

Open the Chrome Web Store, search “themes,” and click Add to Chrome on any theme you like — this only changes the browser’s appearance, separate from the system wallpaper. To remove a theme, go to Settings > Appearance > Reset to default.

Still Not Working?

If wallpaper changes don’t save, check that you’re not signed in as a guest — Guest Mode discards all personalization when you sign out. If the Personalization menu is missing entirely, your device may be managed by a school or workplace policy that disables it.

FAQ

Will a Powerwash reset my wallpaper and theme?

Yes, a Powerwash resets ChromeOS to factory defaults, which includes clearing any custom wallpaper or theme settings.

Can I use a live or animated wallpaper?

ChromeOS doesn’t support animated desktop wallpapers natively, though some Android apps from the Play Store offer live wallpaper functionality within their own interface.

Does changing the theme affect performance?

No, wallpaper and theme changes are purely visual and have no measurable effect on speed or battery life.
