Memory Saver is a built-in Chrome feature that automatically frees up RAM by putting inactive tabs to sleep, then reloading them the moment you click back on them. On a Chromebook with 4GB or 8GB of RAM — most models — this is one of the simplest ways to keep things running smoothly with a lot of tabs open.
How Memory Saver works
When enabled, Chrome automatically freezes tabs that haven’t been used for a while, freeing the memory they were using. When you click back on a suspended tab, it reloads instantly in the background. You’ll typically see a small leaf-shaped icon on a tab that’s been put to sleep. This is different from simply closing tabs: your scroll position, open forms, and tab order are all preserved.

How to turn Memory Saver on
- Open Chrome and go to
chrome://settings/performance(or click the three-dot menu > Settings > Performance). - Toggle Memory Saver on.
- Choose between the available modes if your version offers them — a balanced mode that uses machine learning to time when tabs get suspended, and a more aggressive mode that frees up the most memory by suspending tabs sooner.
Keep specific sites always active
Some sites don’t handle being suspended well — a school LMS with an unsaved quiz timer, a music web app, a video call, or a web-based code editor. On the same Performance settings page, scroll to Always keep these sites active and add any URLs you don’t want Chrome to ever freeze.
When Memory Saver helps the most
If your Chromebook feels sluggish with a lot of tabs open, Memory Saver is a good first thing to check before assuming you need to free up storage space or do a full Powerwash. Use the Chromebook Task Manager to see memory usage per tab both before and after enabling Memory Saver — it’s a good way to confirm it’s actually making a difference on your specific workload.
Combine it with Tab Groups
If you regularly work with dozens of tabs, pairing Memory Saver with Tab Groups makes it much easier to keep track of what’s open, since suspended tabs stay organized in their groups rather than getting lost in a long, flat tab strip.
If a suspended tab causes problems
Occasionally a page reloads with lost form data or scroll position even with Memory Saver’s safeguards, particularly on complex web apps. If that happens regularly on a specific site, add it to the “always active” exceptions list rather than disabling Memory Saver system-wide — you’ll keep the RAM savings everywhere else.
