How to Connect a Chromebook to a Mesh Wi-Fi System (Eero, Orbi, Nest Wifi)

Mesh Wi-Fi systems like Eero, Netgear Orbi, TP-Link Deco, and Google Nest Wifi are supposed to make whole-home coverage effortless, and connecting a Chromebook to one works exactly like connecting to any other Wi-Fi network. The issues that come up are usually about roaming between mesh points, not the initial connection.

Quick answer: Connect to your mesh network’s Wi-Fi name the same way you’d connect to any router — click the time, select the network, enter the password. Most mesh systems use one network name for all points, so your Chromebook should automatically hand off between them as you move around. If it doesn’t, forget the network and reconnect, or check your mesh app for band-steering settings.

Should I use separate network names for each band on a mesh system?

Generally no. Most mesh systems recommend one combined network name so devices can roam freely between bands and points. Splitting them into separate names (2.4GHz-only, 5GHz-only) can actually make roaming worse, not better.

Why does my Chromebook show a strong signal but still feel slow?

Signal strength measures the connection to the nearest mesh point, not the speed of the backhaul link between that point and your main router. A strong signal to a poorly placed satellite point can still be slow.

Does my Chromebook need to support Wi-Fi 6 or 6E to work with a mesh system?

No. Mesh systems support older devices fine — they’ll just connect at whatever standard your Chromebook supports (Wi-Fi 5, 6, or 6E), not the mesh system’s maximum.
