Chromebook Can’t Find 5GHz Wi-Fi: Why and What to Do

Common Causes

A missing 5GHz network is usually caused by the router combining both bands under one name (band steering) so the 5GHz network isn’t visible separately, being too far from the router for the shorter-range 5GHz signal to reach, the Chromebook’s Wi-Fi adapter not supporting 5GHz at all, or the router’s 5GHz radio being disabled in its settings.

Fix Steps

Step 1: Check your router’s band settings

Log into the router’s admin page (often 192.168.1.1) and look for separate SSIDs for 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Some routers use “band steering” to merge them under one name, in which case your device connects to whichever band is stronger automatically and there’s no separate 5GHz network to select.

Step 2: Split the bands if merged

If your router combines bands and you want to choose manually, most admin panels let you disable band steering and assign a distinct name to each band, such as “HomeWifi” and “HomeWifi_5G.”

Step 3: Move closer to the router

5GHz has a shorter range and struggles more with walls than 2.4GHz. If you’re in another room or floor from the router, the 5GHz network may simply not reach you.

Step 4: Confirm your Chromebook supports 5GHz

Check your model’s specifications online for “802.11ac” or “802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6)” support, both of which include 5GHz. Older 802.11n-only Chromebooks are 2.4GHz only.

Step 5: Restart the router

Occasionally a router’s 5GHz radio can crash independently of the 2.4GHz radio while it keeps running. A restart resets both bands.

Step 6: Check for a ChromeOS update

Go to Settings > About ChromeOS > Check for updates, since Wi-Fi driver bugs affecting specific bands are occasionally fixed in ChromeOS updates.

If another 5GHz-capable device sees the network fine but the Chromebook doesn’t, the issue is almost certainly the Chromebook’s hardware support or its Wi-Fi driver rather than the router. In that case, 2.4GHz is your only option on that device.
