The short version: ChromeOS’s design makes traditional Windows-style viruses far less of a threat, but that doesn’t mean the device is risk-free. It relies on Verified Boot (which checks system integrity on every startup and can self-repair if tampered with) and sandboxing (which isolates browser tabs, apps, and extensions from each other and the rest of the system). What Actually Protects a Chromebook

  • Verified Boot — on every startup, ChromeOS checks its own system files against a known-good signature. If anything’s been tampered with, it automatically reverts to a clean, previous version instead of booting compromised code.
  • Sandboxing — each browser tab, Android app, and Linux (Crostini) container runs in its own isolated space. A malicious website or app is contained to that sandbox and can’t reach the rest of the system.

  • Scam or fake “your Chromebook is infected” pop-ups — these are almost always browser-based scare tactics, not real infections; closing the tab (or the browser entirely) is usually enough

What You Should Actually Do
