The Chromebook Odyssey #10 — 2018: Crostini Brings Linux to ChromeOS (and the Tablet Detour)

By 2018, a Chromebook could run the web and a million Android apps. At Google I/O that May, it learned a third language: Linux. In the same year, Google’s ChromeOS tablet ambitions rose and crashed within eight months. In 2018, Google shipped Crostini, official Linux app support on ChromeOS, running a real Debian container inside a lightweight VM, no Developer Mode required. It arrived in Chrome OS 69 (September 2018) and turned Chromebooks into legitimate developer machines. The same year’s Pixel Slate tablet flopped, ending Google’s ChromeOS tablet push.

Before Crostini: the Developer Mode era

Linux on Chromebooks wasn’t new: enthusiasts had run it since the Cr-48’s hidden switch. The standard tool, Crouton, ran Ubuntu alongside ChromeOS, but demanded Developer Mode: security disabled, Verified Boot bypassed, data wiped on entry, and a scary warning screen at every boot. Powerful, but a hack that traded away exactly the safety that made ChromeOS worth using.

Google’s answer, announced at I/O in May 2018, was radical in a very ChromeOS way: full Linux, without sacrificing security.

How Crostini works — and why the design was clever

Crostini runs a real Debian Linux container inside Termina, a minimal virtual machine managed by ChromeOS’s crosvm hypervisor. The layering matters:

  • The VM boundary isolates Linux completely from ChromeOS: a compromised container can’t touch your browser, files, or boot chain.
  • Verified Boot stays intact. No Developer Mode, no wiped data, no warning screens.
  • Linux apps appear in the ChromeOS launcher and open in normal windows, alongside web and Android apps.
  • Files can be shared per-folder, deliberately, rather than everything being exposed by default.

It shipped in Chrome OS 69 in September 2018. Suddenly a $300 laptop could run VS Code, Git, Docker, GIMP, and a full terminal, all safely. The audience shift was real. Chromebooks entered developer conversations for the first time: the Pixelbook, with its fast NVMe storage and 16GB option, abruptly made sense as a programmer’s machine.

The tablet detour: Pixel Slate

2018’s other big bet went worse. ChromeOS tablets were meant to counter the iPad: Acer’s Chromebook Tab 10 arrived for schools in spring, and in October Google launched the Pixel Slate, a beautiful 12.3-inch detachable tablet, $599 to $1,599, keyboard and pen sold separately.

The reviews were brutal. ChromeOS’s tablet mode in 2018 was laggy and half-finished; the entry Celeron models stuttered on basic tasks; and the price with accessories rivaled a Surface Pro or iPad Pro that each did tablet things better. Within months Google cut prices, and by June 2019 it confirmed the retreat: no more Google-built ChromeOS tablets, focus returned to laptops. (The clamshell Pixelbook Go, in 2019, was exactly that.) The concept later found its actual audience at the budget end — the Lenovo Chromebook Duet’s $279 detachable formula in 2020 succeeded everywhere the Slate hadn’t.

Why it still matters today

Crostini completed the modern ChromeOS identity: one machine, four runtimes (web, Android, Linux, and the underlying ChromeOS itself) each in its own security boundary. The VM-based approach became the platform’s template: Android’s ARC++ later moved into a VM of its own, and the short-lived Steam gaming effort (a later chapter) used the same architecture. And the Slate? Its failure taught Google a discipline lesson: ChromeOS wins on keyboards, classrooms, and cost, not on chasing the iPad. The platform never seriously wandered from laptops again.
