Fix Googlebook’s broken Better Together features

If the phone features on your new Googlebook suddenly went quiet this week, no notification sync, no Continue On, no Files app pickup from your Android phone, you’re not imagining it. Chrome Unboxed founder Robby Payne, the same reviewer behind our first Googlebook hands-on coverage, hit the same wall on October 16 after testing across all five launch Googlebooks, and the cause has nothing to do with a flaky laptop.

Googlebook’s Better Together features, App Streaming, Notification Sync, Files app continuity, and Continue On, can stall after a factory reset, a sign-out and sign-in, or switching between launch models. Old device sessions pile up on your Google Account and the background connection can no longer tell which one is active. The fix is to open your account’s device list, sign out of the stale Googlebook entries, and keep only the one you’re using.

What actually broke

Better Together is Googlebook’s version of Phone Hub: it links your Android phone and your laptop so notifications, recent tabs, and files move between them without you doing anything. Payne found his Lenovo Googlebook 15 had stopped talking to his phone entirely, and when he checked the phone’s device group list, it showed three separate entries for that same laptop and three more for a Dell XPS Googlebook he’d also been testing. Each reset or re-login had quietly left behind a ghost session instead of replacing the old one.

Why new Googlebooks are more exposed to this

Most people will never touch five Googlebooks in a month, so this bug is rarer in the wild than it was in a reviewer’s test lab. But the underlying trigger, logging out, factory resetting, or trading one launch model for another, is exactly what happens during a return, a warranty swap, or a simple change of mind in the weeks right after a purchase. With five OEMs shipping launch hardware at once and Best Buy swaps reportedly common, stale sessions are going to show up on real owners’ accounts too, just less often than on a review unit.

What Chromebook owners should do

If Better Together quietly stopped working on your Googlebook, skip the reboot and go straight to your Google Account instead. Open Chrome, go to google.com, click your profile icon, and choose “Manage your Google Account.” From there, open Security & sign-in, then Your devices, then Manage all devices. Look under the Googlebook OS devices section for any entries you don’t recognize or no longer use, open each one, and sign it out. Leave only the session tied to the Googlebook you’re actually using. Payne reported the features came back immediately once he’d cleared the duplicates, with no restart needed.

One catch worth knowing about: there’s currently no delete option inside the phone’s own Cross-device services menu, so the account-side cleanup above is the only real workaround for now. If you’ve recently factory reset a Googlebook, signed out and back in, or swapped models at a store, that’s reason enough to check your device list even if everything still seems to be working.

A rough edge, not a dealbreaker

This is the kind of bug that shows up when five companies ship new hardware onto a brand-new OS in the same month, and it’s an easy one to fix once you know where to look. It doesn’t point to anything wrong with the Better Together feature set itself, which is still the main reason to pair a Googlebook with an Android phone in the first place, alongside tools like Smart Lock for unlocking with your phone. Worth keeping in the back of your mind if you’re due to trade in, reset your device, or you’re still weighing whether to move from a Chromebook to a Googlebook anytime soon.
