Georgia libraries pair free Google AI training with Chromebook loans

Google announced on July 16 that it’s partnering with the Georgia Public Library Service to give every library cardholder in the state free access to Google Career Certificates and the Google AI Professional Certificate. It’s a small state program on paper, but it points at something bigger: libraries are quietly becoming the place where people without a fast (or any) Chromebook at home get hands-on with AI for the first time.

Georgia’s 410 public libraries are now offering free, self-paced Google AI Professional Certificate and Google Career Certificate training to anyone with a library card, no degree or prior experience required. Georgia libraries also have more than 10,000 laptops available for checkout statewide, so patrons without a Chromebook at home can take the courses on library hardware. Registration runs through georgialibraries.org/grow-with-google, and each license lasts up to six months.

What Google and Georgia just launched

The partnership, announced through Google’s Grow with Google program, covers two tracks. The Google AI Professional Certificate teaches prompt writing, foundational AI fluency, and how to apply generative tools to everyday work tasks. The broader Google Career Certificates program covers cybersecurity, data analytics, digital marketing and e-commerce, IT support, project management, and UX design.

Patrons register through their local library’s page or directly at georgialibraries.org/grow-with-google, and each license covers up to six months of self-paced study. Graduates get access to a hiring consortium of more than 150 employers, including AT&T, Deloitte, and Google itself, and Google points to a 2025 survey finding over 70% of graduates reported a new job, promotion, or raise within six months of finishing.

Why the Chromebook angle matters

Georgia’s state librarian, Julie Walker, made a point of tying the training to hardware access, noting the state’s 410 public libraries have more than 10,000 laptops available for checkout. That detail matters more than it looks. A library laptop fleet doing double duty as an AI classroom follows the same logic that put Chromebooks in most US classrooms in the first place: cheap, easy-to-manage hardware plus free software removes the two biggest barriers to getting people online. Pairing free AI training with an already-existing checkout program is a more concrete pitch than most “digital literacy” announcements manage.

If your local library runs a laptop checkout program, there’s a decent chance it leans on Chromebooks rather than full Windows machines, for the same budget and management reasons schools did. Worth asking your branch directly, since hardware choices vary a lot by library system and county.

What Chromebook owners should do

You don’t need to live in Georgia to benefit from this kind of program.
